Consumers have long been able to rate hotels online: their cleanliness, the location, service and courtesy of the staff. Same goes for mechanics, restaurants, tax accountants, and virtually anything you can spend money on.
Lately though consumer reviews and customer ratings have entered a whole new ball game: healthcare. Patients have become their own strongest advocate and taken to the masses online to spread the word about how good (or not so good) their healthcare provider was, be it a family physician or new orthodontist. Now patients can even rate their recent hospital stay.
Many consumer review websites that offer hospital reviews encourage users to reveal how well the staff at the hospital explained what medications they would be taking and what exactly they were for. Or how well they controlled the pain, how clean the room was, and how attentive was the staff. The intent is to focus on objective quality and safety measures to ensure patients receive first-rate healthcare.
