Drop Shipping?

I’ve been involved with various ecommerce companies in all different stages of growth. What has always surprised me is the seemingly universal use of drop-shippers from home businesses doing $10k/year to corporations doing millions of dollars of sales.

For those not familiar with the term drop-shipping it works like this:

1. You sell something online to somebody else online.
2. You contact your drop-shipper after the sale takes place and tell them to ship it to your customer.
3. You pay the drop-shipper and whatever the difference is between what you collected and what you paid is your profit.

This is, of course, overly-simplified, but still a pretty accurate description of a common drop-ship scenario.
